| Custom
crafted woodworking makes a lot of sense.
Some of the best reasons to get custom
work include a better fit, uniqueness,
design continuity, superior materials,
and superior durability and structure. |
|

|
Better
Fit |
| Every
home is different, and
unless you live in a
perfectly boring rectangular
box, there are going
to be issues with fitting
cabinetry into your
space - unless you use
cabinetry that is specifically
designed with your kitchen
in mind.
With
a custom made piece,
you won't have to worry
about whether or not
it will fit when it
is installed. After
all, we build the custom
made woodwork taking
into consideration the
space's specific dimensions. |

|
Uniqueness |
| Mass
market manufacturers
are in business to make
money like everyone
else. To do so, they
have to make items that
would look good in most
people's homes.
So, they can't put too
much personality into
any of their pieces.
Designing
a mass-market piece
of cabinetry is similar
to painting your house
beige and taking down
all the pictures off
the walls when you are
trying to sell it. You
have to remove all personality
from the design! |

|
Design
Continuity |
| Through
the years, people have
had a habit of adding
knick-knacks and pieces
of color to their kitchens
and other spaces. Once
the personality of the
room has been established,
sometimes the cabinetry
can be designed to accentuate
it.
Such
personality can be matched
with shape and style,
but also by the wood selection
used to construct the
piece. Different stains,
too offer a different
feeling with their unique
tones that can help to
enhance the personality
of a uniquely designed
space. It's impossible
to accomplish this with
pressed board and false
wood. |

|
Superior
Materials and Durability |
| The
bottom line is that mass
marketed wood products
have to be constructed
and priced in such a way
that using higher quality
woods is difficult. Most
mass marketed cabinetry
for instance make significant
use of pressed board and
veneers. For the same
reasons, when real wood
is used in mass market
pieces, the designers
try to minimize the amount
of wood used.
For
example, the sides of
most off-the-shelf cabinetry
are 1/4" thick while
the standard for our shop
here at Knothole is 3/4"
thick. Thus, the custom
piece will be far more
durable.

|
| So
as you can see, the real question is,
why would anyone buy off-the-shelf wood
products rather than custom? The short
answer - price. But even here, the off
the shelf wood products don't deliver.
The perception is that when you buy
a mass market cabinetry product you
will save money. However, by the time
you take the steps of paying for delivery,
assembly, and installer, and other customizations
necessary to make the mass market item
fit - you have often paid as much or
more than the cost of a custom designed
piece with superior materials! So, if
you want to work with genuine people,
not order forms and 1-800 numbers, give
us a call and get a free estimate. I
think you'll be pleasantly surprised. |
